.

Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid that is the main energy source of the colon. It also helps rebuild the gut epithelial cells and removes ammonia. Recent research shows that it triggers the body to remove oxygen in the colon, which is greatly helps control pathogens (beneficial bacteria are anaerobes, they don’t like oxygen). Lacking good bacteria in our colon, such as when we take antibiotics, can lead to an insufficient supply of butyrate.

.

Larch Tree Arabinogalactan. See Chapter 2 “Fibers and Resistant Starch”. This soluble fiber is a very important part of The Gut Health Protocol.

According to research, this is one of the few fibers that can be used with active SIBO. Helps eliminate ammonia producing bacteria. It is a very slow fermenter, meaning that it does not have time to ferment in the small intestine.

.

Acacia Senegal – Another slow fermenting soluble fiber; a good fiber choice even with active SIBO.

.

See this link for travel packs.

.

Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum (PHGG). An excellent fiber for feeding good bacteria and producing Butyrate. A relatively slow soluble fiber; this means most of it is fermented in the colon, not the small intestine.

Apple Pectin – A soluble fiber made from apples.

.

An good fiber for most people, but do not take this one if you have fructose malabsorption. Start at 1/4 tsp, once per day. Work up 1/2 tsp, 2-3 times per day. This fiber is more expensive than the other fibers but has some unique biological properties; it is the only one found in human breast milk.

.

An excellent source of fiber and tastes great! Simply sweeten with a little pure stevia. Used in The Gut Health Protocol mixed with other soluble fibers to make a very tasty high fiber drink.

.

Organic Marshmallow Root Root – A mucogenic used to help heal the lining of the intestine. Should not be used if there is still SIBO or a dysbiosis of the colon. This is because it can allow bacteria and biofilm colonies to hide behind the mucus. See the end of Chapter 2 for more information.

.

Organic Aloe Vera – Another mucogenic, used to help heal the lining of the intestine. Should not be used if there is still SIBO or a dysbiosis of the colon. This is because it can allow bacteria and biofilm colonies to hide behind the mucus. See the end of Chapter 2 for more information.

.

High Potency DGL (Licorice) 750 mg – A mucogenic used to help heal the lining of the intestine. Should not be used if there is still SIBO or a dysbiosis of the colon.
